Landscape framework
The landscape proposals are designed to provide a connected sequence of spaces that support a variety of activities and experiences throughout the site.
The key landscape components include:
- Southern Country Park.
- High point offering long-distance views.
- Kickabout area.
- Central play area.
- North–south green link.
- Connection to the Country Park.
- Landscape buffer to Henfield Road.
- Connections to facilities within the allocated land to the north.
Doorstep play
Four smaller informal play areas are proposed at suitable locations throughout the site, providing convenient doorstep play opportunities while also acting as stopping points along longer pedestrian routes.
The doorstep play areas will incorporate natural play elements, such as boulders, stepping logs and play mounds, designed to complement the surrounding landscape. Intended primarily for younger children, these spaces will provide an engaging environment that encourages exploration, imaginative play and informal recreation.
Southern County park
A large area of Public Open Space is proposed on the higher ground to the south-east of the site, creating a natural destination with long-distance views towards the north.
A network of mown paths will provide a choice of circular walking routes throughout the space. The flattest area will be maintained as mown grass to accommodate informal ball games and other recreational activities.
The principal features of the Public Open Space include:
- High point offering long-distance views to the north, with seating.
- Kickabout area.
- Short circular walking route.
- Long circular walking route.
- Steeper path providing direct access to the high point.
- Gently sloping path providing an accessible route to the high point.
- Buffer planting to screen views of the built development.
- Planting to provide a landscape buffer to the listed buildings.
- Native tree planting of varying forms and sizes.
Central Play Space
A Local Equipped Area for Play (LEAP) is proposed at the centre of the site, providing play opportunities primarily for children up to eight years of age. A range of timber play equipment will offer activities including swinging, balancing, climbing, spinning, sliding and brachiating.
The LEAP has been designed with accessibility as a key consideration. Inclusive play equipment will cater for children of all abilities, while hard-surfaced paths will ensure that all areas of the play space are easily accessible.
Benches will be provided throughout the play area, and an adjacent area of mown grass will offer additional opportunities for informal play and recreation.
