Access and movement
The movement strategy has been developed through a review of the wider masterplan proposals, ensuring integration with existing and proposed active travel routes while also providing strong connectivity within the site and to the surrounding area, including pedestrian links to Albourne.
Site access
Vehicular access to the development will be provided from Henfield Road, with access points located to the north and east of the site.
The principal streets will run through the centre of the development, creating a clear and legible movement network. Lower-order streets will connect to these primary routes, providing access to the residential areas while supporting a logical street hierarchy.
Street Hierarchy
The proposed road hierarchy has been simplified to minimise the visual dominance of highways within the development. An emphasis has been placed on private drives fronting key landscape features, creating a softer edge to the built form and contributing to a more attractive and landscape-led streetscape.
Permeability
The overall block structure provides a high degree of permeability, creating a network of pedestrian routes throughout the development and into the proposed areas of open space.
Pedestrian routes will connect with the existing Public Rights of Way network, enhancing local movement connections. A dedicated cycle route through the site will also provide new links to Henfield Road.
Active Travel
The proposed framework responds to the site’s constraints and opportunities, ensuring that the existing landscape is integrated and given prominence within the development.
The highly permeable block structure will create a sequence of connected routes and spaces, with key areas overlooked by dwellings to provide strong natural surveillance.
The development will connect to and enhance the existing pedestrian network, including links to Public Rights of Way. The proposed cycle route will encourage active travel across the wider area, including cycling connections to Hassocks Railway Station to support commuting journeys into London.
